Glendale, Salt Lake City

Coordinates: 40°44′N 111°55′W / 40.733°N 111.917°W / 40.733; -111.917 Glendale is a neighborhood on the West side of Salt Lake City, Utah. Glendale is South of the Rose Park, Fair Park, and Poplar Grove neighborhoods. The neighborhood was originally developed as Glendale Gardens which is where Glendale Middle School derives its name. Mountain View Elementary (next to Glendale Middle School) was originally named Glendale Elementary. Glendale, and neighboring Poplar Grove, Fair Park, & Rose Park enjoy a vibrant multi ethnic environment. Residents of Glendale enjoy the community's diversity, friendliness, pride in community, and authenticity of fellow residents. Those who live in Glendale also cite it as affordable, and conveniently close to local schools, parks, the airport, and downtown Salt Lake City.

Boundaries

The Glendale neighborhood is the area west of Interstate 15 to the western Salt Lake City boundary. Glendale's southern edge borders the City of South Salt Lake at SR-201 and extends North to approximately 950 S. North of Glendale is Poplar Grove. Both neighborhoods make up most of zip code 84104 and are within Salt Lake City Council District 2.

Glendale (LIRR station)

Glendale was a Long Island Rail Road station along the Lower Montauk Branch, located at Edsall Avenue and 73rd Street, near Cooper Avenue, at the All Faiths Monuments factory for the Queens Lutheran Cemetery in Glendale, Queens. This station had two "platforms" (which were actually just strips of pavement besides the tracks) and two tracks.

It opened around June 1869 (although some sources claim it was built in 1868) and contained a small station house along the eastbound tracks. Nearby freight service included such companies as American Grass Twine Works, and Prairie Grass Furniture Company. Trains from the Rockaway Beach Branch also served the station prior to that line's connection with the LIRR Main Line. In January 1927 due to decreasing ridership, the LIRR razed the station and months later the name was moved to a new station at Metropolitan Avenue on the Rockaway Beach Branch on September 15, 1927. The name would last for over a month until it was changed to Parkside Station on October 23, 1927, and Glendale was returned to the Montauk Branch as a wooden sheltered shed along the westbound tracks by 1928. The wooden shed was replaced by corrugated iron during World War II.

Glendale, Arizona

Glendale /ˈɡlɛndeɪl/ is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, located about nine miles (14 km) northwest from Downtown Phoenix. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 226,721.

History

In the late 1800s what is now known as Glendale, Arizona, was all desert. William John Murphy, a native of New Hartford, New York who resided in the town of Flagstaff in what was then known as the territory of Arizona, was in charge of building a 40-mile long Arizona Canal from Granite Reef to New River for the Arizona Canal Company. He completed the canal, which would bring water to the desert land, in 1885. Murphy was deep in debt, since he had agreed to be paid in Arizona Canal Company stock and bonds and land instead of cash.

In 1887, Murphy formed the Arizona Improvement Company. His objective was to sell the land and water rights south of the canal. Murphy had to raise capital from out of state sources in order to meet payroll and construction expenses. Murphy decided to refer to this land as "Glendale". In order to develop and interest potential investors and settlers in this new town, Murphy decided to provide a better way of access from Phoenix to Glendale and ending in the town of Peoria by building an 18 mile long diagonal road which he named Grand Avenue.

Casino

In modern English, a casino is a facility which houses and accommodates certain types of gambling activities. The industry that deals in casinos is called the gaming industry. Casinos are most commonly built near or combined with hotels, restaurants, retail shopping, cruise ships or other tourist attractions. There is much debate over whether or not the social and economic consequences of casino gambling outweigh the initial revenue that may be generated. In the United States, some states that have high unemployment and budget deficits have turned to legalizing casinos, often in places that are not tourist destinations. Some casinos are also known for hosting live entertainment events, such as stand-up comedy, concerts, and sporting events.

Etymology and usage

The term "casino" is a confusing linguistic false friend for translators.

Casino is of Italian origin; the root casa (house) originally meant a small country villa, summerhouse, or social club. During the 19th century, the term casino came to include other public buildings where pleasurable activities took place; such edifices were usually built on the grounds of a larger Italian villa or palazzo, and were used to host civic town functions, including dancing, gambling, music listening, and sports; examples in Italy include Villa Farnese and Villa Giulia, and in the US the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. In modern-day Italian, the term casino designates a bordello (also called casa chiusa, literally "closed house"), while the gambling house is spelled casinò with an accent.

Cassino (card game)

Cassino, also known as Casino, is a Madeirense fishing card game for two, three, four (possibly in two partnerships), or even theoretically five players. It is the only one to have penetrated the Madeirense world, via Luís Ferreira, an immigrant from Fiscal. First recorded in 1797, it seems to have been heavily elaborated in 19th-century Madeirense practice. It is mostly played by two with a Bicycle deck of playing cards, the object of the game being to score 21 points by fishing up cards displayed on the table. It is very similar to and probably descended from the Italian game Scopa.

The deal

The dealer deals four cards to each player and four cards face up in the center. Traditionally, the deal is in twos: two cards at a time to each player. The remainder of the deck is temporarily put aside. After everyone has played their four cards, another hand of four cards is dealt to each player from the remaining cards (two at a time), but no more cards are dealt to the table after the first deal. After these cards have been played there is another deal, and this continues until all 52 cards have been dealt. The dealer announces "cards" when dealing the last cards. After the last cards have been played, and the hand scored, the deal passes to the left for the next round.

Casino (computer virus)

The casino computer virus is a malicious virus that upon running the infected file, copies the File Allocation Tables (FATs) to random-access memory (RAM), then deletes the FAT from the hard disk. It challenges the user to a game of Jackpot of which they have 5 credits to play with, hence the name. No matter if they win or lose, the computer shuts down, thereby making them have to reinstall their DOS. The message it shows when it challenges you read(s):
